The Antikythera Mechanism

A one hour talk that informs the audience about the discovery, history and operation of the Antikythera Mechanism. The talk covers the research that has been carried out so far on the Mechanism as well as how recent technology allowed us to reveal many of its secrets.

The talk can be accompanied by a display of interactive, digital images of the fragments of the Mechanism and twenty banners, designed by Prof Xenophon Moussas of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and funded by the Institute of Physics. The banners describe in detail the history, significance and operation of the Mechanism and can be displayed, together with the digital images, as part of an exhibition dedicated to the Antikythera Mechanism. Setting up the exhibition requires access to a large hall, and twenty computers with the relevant software installed and checked beforehand.

Testimonial

“Maria delivered a lecture about The Antikythera Mechanism which is superbly interesting, mainly because of its complexity, yet Maria brought the history and the science and engineering together and again allowed us all to make some sense of the oldest computer. Maria is thoroughly reliable and on one occasion she stood in for us at 5 days notice when another guest speaker was unable to give their lecture! Thank you Maria!” Natalie Watson, Head of Science, Malvern College
