Clocks and Gears
A one hour interactive talk on how gears have been used in clock-making since the antiquities. The talk enriches the year 5 science curriculum as it explains the motion and mathematics of gears when they are linked together. It covers astronomical clocks and how they have been used in ancient times to predict the apparent movements of the sun, the known planets and the moon.
This work was developed for the CREATIONS European project which focused on creative science education. A teaching guide for the talk and workshop can be found at Sci-Arts Creative Teaching Resource.
